Group meeting - Harriet, Jade, Francesca and Nicola.

Discussing the miscommunication problems within the group, exchanging further ideas and developing the blog. Miscommunication problems include : misunderstanding over internet discussions, harriet having technical problems with her phone, generally sorted out any problems with individual tasks.

Spoke about extra items of clothing and jewellery to add to the shoot.

When discussing group ideas, we contemplated the use of a mirror to portray the split personality that Roberta has. We came across this photo of Brigitte Bardot holding up a large frame and felt that it was a perfect example to portray our ideas. Its very simple but can be really effective if the editing techniques are applied correctly.

Editorial Examples

Today, Nicola and I (Harriet) had a meeting to discuss previous editorials in several different female based magazines. We found the characters from Desperately Seeking Susan on the covers of Playboy and Rolling Stones but felt that they weren't appropriate for the editorial style we are aiming for. Whilst browsing several blogs, we came across the above photographs which were an attempt to recreate the 1985 Madonna classic. Use of props, styling (and even a Madonna lookalike) created distinctive connotations which instantly relate to the film.

WHAT were the 80s?

The 80’s were a great time. At that time MTV was created and revolutionized fashion, the music industry and even how we watched TV. BUT it was also thought as a period of  bad hair, horrible clothing and music that often had more to do with machines than talent. 

 

They didn't accessorize - they "excessorized" and LOVED it.

The clothes worn in the 80s depicted people who were trying to find themselves a nother word for that is SOUL SEARCHING. They looked for ways to express their creativity and individuality. Men wore heavy make up and grew long hair. Women wore short hair and layers of clothing.Both sexes were looking for an identity. 

NOW  1980s clothing styles are back on the shelves. 

So enjoy and go crazy on the layers, the ballistic hair and go do some SOUL SEARCHING and give it all a 2011/2012 twist.

After working 5 hours together Jade, Maria and I managed to find 5 outfits, which represent Susan and the film. Each outfit was carefully chosen and discussed. The outfits each represent Susan’s way of life and a hint of Roberta. We had great fun putting this all together. We played around with the accessories so they would reflect the films twisted way about the religion, Egypt and the carefree life of Susan.

Second group meeting.

 In today's meeting, Me, Francesca and Maria got through a lot. We covered photo shoot location, rough mood boards and final outfits. 
As you can see from the record of minutes I have scanned in, you can tell when we done each thing. 
Also we have decided individual roles we need to fulfil before we have our next meeting, which is on Friday 25th November 2011 PM.

I just realised that all the recurring themes in Desperately Seeking Susan are linked to one jacket that may or may not have been worn by Jimi Hendrix, and now worn by infamous Susan (Madonna), a New York drifter whose carefree life is followed via the personals section in a tabloid by a bored suburban housewife named Roberta (Rosanna Arquette).

After seeing the importance of the clothes I researched a bit about who designed those remarcable clothes and the unforgetable jacket Madonna had on( This jacket plays a huge role and is completly unique). The khaki green metallic fabric is perfectly offset by a brash black and gold swirling pattern on the lapels and cuffs while the gold and red brocade pyramid under an eye, like a dollar bill, plays up to the involvement of some stolen Egyptian earrings.

NOW The film’s costume designer is Santo Loquasto.

THIS JACKET IS THE REASON FOR ROBERTAS TRANSFORMATION AND FOR SUSANS TROUBLES. THIS JACKET  IS THE  REASON FOR A LOT  OF PROBLEMS AND TRANSFORMATIONS. SO WE SHOULD definitely FIND A SIMiLAR JACKET.

Also this film is constantly flirting with gender, sex, religion and acceptability, Desperately Seeking Susan represents a moment in time.

These are just some thoughts that will help us to get started.

Clothing & Accessories Mood Boards

I decided to crack on and create a couple of mood boards on Photoshop. I have focused on a few key items taken from my previous post as these are very current items seen on the catwalk and on the high street today! This will help us greatly when sourcing garments/accessories for the shoot as we may have similar items in our own wardrobes.

Desperately Seeking Susan Trailer

So as I haven't watched the film yet, I decided to look at clips on You Tube to initially understand what the film is about and get involved with brainstorming for ideas for the shoot.

Just from watching this trailer, there is a distinct 80's fashion style apparent....key items include:

• Layering Lace (gloves, hair scarf, top)
• Sheer (top with bra on show underneath)
• Bra (straps are on-show quite a lot)
• Bustier
• Red Lipstick
• Black Sunglasses (wayfarer style)
• Pyramid Jacket (there is a scene about a particular jacket which is important to include)
• Necklaces (lots of silver necklaces piled on top of each other & choker)
• Crosses/Studs (on jewellery e.g. rosemary beads, shoes and clothing)
• Hair Scarf
• Leggings
• Cigarette

The overall look is very grungy and the colour palette is mainly black with a hint of silver embellishment and the odd splash of colour every now and then. The hair style is shaggy and unkempt with black roots and blonde ends.

Group meeting tomorrow.

After today's lesson, there will be a group meeting tomorrow 12pm at Cesca's house to arrange a mood board of ideas, location, styling etc.. I will be creating an agenda of things we have to get through tomorrow so we can move this project on smoothly and swiftly.

A nother idea

Just a few mintues ago I realised that we should somehow show via our images or presentation the lack of technology that is used in the film. The only way everybody communicates in the film is through the newspaper allthough this is not big broadcasting it can be compared to facebook because nearly everybody has the possibility to see where and when susan meets her lovers or strangers. If it was not for this newspaper the poor desprate housewife Roberta would not have figured herself out( that she is worth more then she was being treated by her husband).

DESPRATE--> This word nearly reflects everyone and everything  in this film.
These are just some points we should think about while developing our styling project.

desperately seeking susan

First impressions: After watching the film with Jade-->We shared and dicussed our personal impressions and ideas. This helped a lot to find locations and intersting ideas. 
I thought the film gave the viewer a very messy ambiance. So the first idea I had is that we could take scenes/pictures in a bar (smokey bar). Also I was thinking that music plays a big role in this film and being artisic. SO maybe we could include instruments in our images or even a rock band. The band in the film had skulls all over their cases to carry their instruments. So this must be photoshopped into our images.:)
Jewelry: I have similair necklaces and bracelettes so maybe we can use those.

The great thing about this film is that most of the clothes are made to wear. 29th----> I have allready contacted a friend from my modeling agency who is also a hairdresser. He would love to be involved doing hair and also he knows a few makeup artists (beginners) who would also love to be involved.  Lets see how that works out because we still have to plan exacly where and when we will all meet.

Initial thoughts on the film.

Me and Francesca went to her place and watched the film together. Throughout we were both making notes and getting loads of ideas on where and how we could do potential photo shoots. 

A few of the things I noted down during the film -

Appearance - LOADS of jewellery, bright make up (especially eyes and lips) and big hair! Also the contrast of lace against leather. 

Location - Back streets, dirty scenarios and a lot of smoke (smoking). 

Key points - Constant use of Susan's leather jacket, newspaper ads and the stolen earrings.

From these notes I got a range of photo shoot ideas. From an accessory focussed shoot to a shoot involving Roberta staring into a mirror with Susan as her reflection staring back.
